Welcome to the first episode of Playback. Each week we'll explore all manner of genres and styles, you'll never know in which direction we will head! Our focus is on more recent Australian releases, but we'll also dig through the archives and join the musical dots between recent sounds and the acts that inspired them. We'll also include our dear neighbours, New Zealand and some of their fine acts.
Today we'll play two tracks from one of Australia's much loved rock bands, The Clouds. They returned recently with a new collection of songs, we'll here something from their Zaffre EP as well, their cover of one of the greatest songs of all time, penned by a recent visitor to our shores, Jimmy Webb.
Listening to the Clouds I was reminded of Ponytail Kink from Adelaide, who share a similar touch of 'wall of noise' melodic pop.
There's a soulful double punch from Tasmania's Mama K and the BIg Love and Melbourne's The Meltdown, cute catchy indiepop from Perth's Simone and Girlfunkle and a track from one of my favourite albums from last year, Dusken Lights. Plus much more...
This is an Australian track.
Wanderers have abbreviated their name (formerly Wasted Wanderers) and taken their songwriting up a notch. They show off a soulful swagger with excellent release.
This is track has a female lead.
A touch of Southern Soul, Funk and Gospel from Tasmania.
